October 3rd, 2022- Los Angeles — October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and Keep A Breast Foundation wants to remind everyone to focus on what’s key: prevention. This season, Keep A Breast is putting their prevention-centered free app in the hands of young Latinas.

At the start of Hispanic Heritage Month on September 15, Keep A Breast launched a 45-day campaign to reach Latinx Communities in Los Angeles. “To better promote our breast self-check app in L.A., we needed insider help,” said Shaney jo Darden, Founder of Keep A Breast. “Luckily, we found it in two companies recognized for their positive impact in Los Angeles and beyond: 7 Leaves Cafe, and A1 Party Rentals.”

Keep A Breast also earned the support of prominent Latinas: the celebrated Mariachi Divas de Cindy Shea — the first all-female mariachi band ever to be nominated for, and eventually win, a Grammy; Latin Dance champion and entrepreneur Aubrey Ares; and Wendy Pintor, a remarkable athlete in a new, fast-growing sport called teqball (a thrilling mix of soccer and table tennis).

“All of our campaign partners are shining stars in their respective fields,” said Darden. “And having them amplify our preventive message could save many lives.”

The campaign uses a daring hashtag in Spanish urging young L.A. Latinas to check their breasts (#TocateLasChichis), and to download the free KAB app. The resource-filled application connects users who think they may have discovered something during their check with a telehealth medical professional. It is compatible with both Apple and Android platforms, and has interfaces in English, Spanish, and French.

According to the National Cancer Institute, about 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, and some 12,000 women age 40 or younger are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. The good news is that, with early detection, the disease can be defeated.
